This months Newsletter
March 2010 Newsletter
March is a funny month when it comes to trout fishing. Most
streams are muddy and high, this leaves larger bodies of
water as a more promising target. I look for lakes and
ponds which have the clearest water because – I’m a fly
fishermen!

The murky water tells me to use bigger and brighter
patterns than I would use on the same lake in August.  My
approach in March usually means Wooly Buggers. I usually
start with an all white pattern with a bead head in size 7. I
also like this same pattern in orange.  I change size if at first
there are no strikes, then color and go through the same
technique.  If conditions dictate, I will add weight to my
leader to force the fly deeper and go through the same size
ritual.

The kicker is – I will be using a spinning rig with 4 pound
test and a bubble just above the leader.  I fish this rig
because it allows me to cover more water than I can hope
to reach with my traditional fly rod.  High water, strong
breezes and a bit of nippy weather make that 8 foot fly rod a
hard piece of equipment to handle successfully. I am sure
the purest out there will be saying a lot of nasty things.  My
take is this, it catches fish and it uses flies.

As the month goes by and we get to April the closed waters
will re-open and a whole host of technique will come into
play. Stay tuned for my discussion on the “opener”.
