This months Newsletter
February 2010 Newsletter
The fishing season is still under the snow for a lot of guys but not
for long. Last month, I spoke about care for your equipment.  This
month the theme is similar. I want to talk about taking care of you.
Fly fishing is usually not considered a physically demanding sport
and as a result a lot of guys think getting into shape for the season
is not necessary.  Well, perhaps I might have harbored that idea
myself a great number of years ago but I found out differently as I
aged.

My experience indicates that daily walks of 30 minutes will put your
legs and ankles in shape.  If you attempt to walk any distance in a
stream with a difficult bottom in waders or hip boots you know
what being in shape means.  If you are out of shape the day will
end quickly at best and if you are out of shape you can get
seriously hurt or worse if you fall into the water.

I have two dogs and dogs need walks so everyday they oblige me
with 30 minutes on the leash. I bet they think the walks are just for
them. If you don’t have a dog, get a walking buddy and hit the
sidewalk for that quick thirty minute stroll.

Next, you can’t whip that fly line for any period of time if you are out
of shape. If you have a manual occupation no problem you are
probably good to go.  If you work on your butt pushing keys, better
join a health club and get those arms working or start putting in a
bunch of hours in the back yard.

I could go on dealing with each and every part of your body but I
think that would not  be as important as this simple advice.  A
sport requires an individual to be in shape for the sport, fly fishing
is a sport, end of story.
